Name: Alex Johnson
1st Day at Avalon: 02/17/2020
Current Position: Digital Storefront Administrator
Tell us "your story." How did you end up at Avalon?
My first interaction with Avalon occurred in 2013 as a freshman in college. Two of my professors worked for a firm that used Avalon and suggested that we use the company to print a project for class. Fast forward to 2020, I landed a position as a Document Specialist in the Buffalo office. After a brief hiatus due to the pandemic, I returned in 2022 as a member of the Buffalo Service department. At the end of 2023, I transitioned into my current role on the Central Services team.
What’s your favorite thing about Avalon?
Avalon has an extensive team of specialized talent that works together to achieve a common goal of helping our clients. Everyone is supportive, encouraging, and friendly to interact with. Over time, the team becomes like your second family, sharing success and overcoming challenges together.
What’s your favorite thing about your position at Avalon?
The flexibility my position offers in addition to assisting team members with any requests they may have regarding generating estimates and setting up/maintaining bid jobs on our website.
What is your proudest moment at Avalon?
Returning to the company after time spent away and being able to grow professionally with the support and guidance of other team members.
What does a typical workday look like for you?
My day begins at 8:30 a.m. and lasts until 5:00 p.m. A typical workday generally consists of writing up estimates for jobs that are a bit outside of the norm, setting up planrooms on our website for bid jobs, and issuing addendums. In addition to this, I assist with our digital storefront, which allows clients to order certain print products on demand without having to go through the service department to place an order.
What’s your favorite workplace memory?
There are many so it’s hard to pin it down to just one moment. However, one event that sticks out in my mind was when I assisted a client with scanning and preserving the original architectural plans for their historic home here in Buffalo. After the job was completed, the home was featured in a spotlight by Preservation Buffalo Niagara, and it felt amazing to be able to help them preserve such an important part of the home’s history.
What are you listening to right now (music/podcast/audio book)?
I listen to a variety of music. Blondie, Grace Jones, and Donna Summer are probably my favorite people to listen to.
In terms of a podcast, I love listening to Talk Art with Russell Tovey and Robert Diament. They interview artists/collectors and bring so many interesting things to the table, information wise.
What’s a must-read blog or book that you’ve read recently and why?
Endless Night by Agatha Christie. Great plot twist.
What’s your favorite motivational quote?
“There are no limits, really, to what a person can do.” – Keith Haring
If you could go anywhere on vacation, where would it be and why?
My parents both own second homes in South Carolina and Florida, so I am fairly spoiled for vacation spots. However, Japan has always been a dream destination. At one time, I had an aunt who was from Tokyo. The food, people, and culture are worth experiencing at least once!
If you were stuck on an island and could only bring three things, what would they be?
Water, food, and a Game Boy.
What do you do for fun?
During my free time, I enjoy taking Polaroid photos (I have an extensive archive at this point); spending time at home with my partner, Michael, and our three cats; painting/line drawing when I can find the time; and occasionally, reading. My interests vary and are very much about what suits my need to relax at any given time.
