Name: Keria McCowan
1st Day at Avalon: 04/05/2021
Current Position: Legal Technology Analyst
Tell us "your story." How did you end up at Avalon?
Before joining Avalon, I completed law school at Stetson College of Law in Gulfport, Florida. After graduating, I decided that adversarial lawyering wasn’t for me and entered the realm of eDiscovery and document reviewing. I came to Avalon during the pandemic as I was looking to explore a new side of document review. While searching, a recruiter reached out to me about the possibility of learning the back end of legal technology. Despite my fear that I didn’t have enough experience to get the job, I interviewed with the team and was offered the position.
What’s your favorite thing about Avalon?
My favorite thing about Avalon is the culture. I love that everyone is so helpful and collaborative. I’ve never felt out of place here since I started.
What’s your favorite thing about your position at Avalon?
My favorite thing about my position is how challenging it can be. I love being able to use critical thinking to draw from my existing knowledge and achieve positive results to novel issues.
What is your proudest moment at Avalon?
My proudest moment at Avalon so far has been using my available downtime to study for the bar exam. With the support of my team, I was able to pass with a score that leaves me eligible for admission to EIGHTEEN different jurisdictions.
What does a typical workday look like for you?
A typical workday consists of checking in with my team to see if they need any assistance, followed by working through various tasks assigned to our team. Most frequently I work on data collection, ingestion, searching, and production.
What’s your favorite workplace memory?
My favorite workplace memory is a team lunch conducted on a Teams call. It was a good chance to get to know more about everyone since we’re all remote and don’t get the same socialization opportunities as those who work in the office.
What are you listening to right now (music/podcast/audio book)?
Right now, I listen to a lot of my fiancé’s unreleased music. I’ve also recently gotten into ambient music by artists like Alice Coltrane and Laraaji.
What’s a must-read blog or book that you’ve read recently and why?
The Silent Patient is one of my favorite books. If you can avoid spoilers, it's an impressive psychological thriller.
What’s your favorite motivational quote?
“What other people think of you is none of your business.” – Regina Brett
If you could go anywhere on vacation, where would it be and why?
If I could go anywhere on vacation, it would be to a cabin with my extended family. We go to Broken Bow, Oklahoma, annually and it’s always a highlight of my year.
If you were stuck on an island and could only bring three things, what would they be?
I would bring my fiancé for company, an iPod or MP3 player for music, and a solar-powered charger for the MP3 player.
What do you do for fun?
For fun, I typically make music with my fiancé in our home studio. I also spend a lot of time helping friends organize and decorate their homes.
